Sun, May 11, 2008http://thewarlocks.com, Warlocks, The Meek, Stevenson Ranch Davidians, $10

In many respects, the style-tombs this LA band plunders exist in the underground’s collective subconscious. Rhythm guitar and organ combine like nothing but mid-period Velvets; gentler lead flourishes are pure extensions of the Angelino Byrds/Love/Rain Parade tradition; the pulse’s slow-moving inevitability and the shimmering, staggering wall of heavy drug imagery are classic Spaceman 3. These building blocks have been utilised by entire generations of sullen youths. But the way the Warlocks assemble them makes it all sound new, loud and ripe. The band’s considerable size (they’re an octet) gives them a natural sonic width that skinnier combos lack. And their twin drums can conjure up either the 68 Dead or the 78 Cramps (two truly Platonic ideals). But for all this name-checking, the Warlocks’ raunch is unique, thuggy and essential.
It has been nearly a decade since The Generators crashed themselves onto the Underground Los Angeles music scene. What started out to be just a side project turned into a full time band that has 6 full-length releases under their belt, along with numerous tours of Europe, and The United States. Vocalist Doug Kane, and drummer Dirty Ernie Berru were better known for their 10 years spent with the Warner Brothers recording act Schleprock. During the 1990s Schleprock sold over 100,000 records, and were asked to support bands like Bad Religion, Green Day, Rancid, and The Specials. After 10 years of constant touring and an internal meltdown Schleprock disbanded. It did not take long for Berru, and Kane to go back in the garage and kick out another rhythmic monster; this time named The Generators. By the late nineties the fourth wave of Punk had evolved, the sound and attitude had reversed it back to its early street roots. With this raw approach it got tagged as Street Punk. The Generators became a leading force in this new movement in Southern California, and have been credited to kick starting this new Punk resurgence in Los Angeles.

Trevor vesneski (vocals/keys/guitar)
Dominic Carcioppolo (guitar/vocals)
Paul Bahou (bass)
Topher Schultz (drums)

Everyone experiences setbacks. Not everybody roughs them out. In the case of music, it's the device in the universe which provides balance, weeding out anyone not completely committed to what lays before them. In the case of INVERSE, they've powered through the worst of it, only to come out it with their strongest, most inspired set of songs to date.

Born out of the ashes of a high school punk band in California's inland suburban sprawl of the Temecula Valley in the summer of 02', Inverse came together as guitar player Dominic Carcioppolo, vocalist/pianist Trevor Vesneski and bassist Paul Bahou found Topher Shultz, a drummer from Seal Beach with a style reminiscent of John Bonham . The band relocated to Long Beach, CA and released a self titled 5 song EP shortly thereafter with producer Josh Turner (Vast, Rx Bandits). Before the band could do any touring, Trevor's father was diagnosed with Cancer of the Kidney and passed away.

Its significance was felt beyond the reality of a young man losing his father. It gave Trevor a new perspective on the importance of what he was doing and a level of focus that lifted even his fellow members. They hit the road a little over a month later with Seattle band This Providence to expand their fan base and promote their EP. However , Inverse was now a darker entity. The sleek, poppy crunch of their first batch of songs had given way to force and grit. They went into the studio again with Portland-based producer Jacob Portrait (Crosstide, Paint By Numbers) only to emerge with one finished song: "Mescaline."

Disappointed but more determined than ever the band decided to take the rest of the year off from touring; INVERSE was going to record an album. For 6 months the band met no less than 4 times a week, writing, re-writing, demoing, all while maintaining dialogue with a handful of indie label A&R scouts. Jacob Portrait was tapped once again to produce. The budget was going to be tight, but everyone was committed. Then, life happened once more.

Cancer. This time it was one of the band members. Not a relative, not a friend, it was Paul. He was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin's Lymphoma. All momentum within the band was now gone. In addition, Jake dropped off the project to record the LP. The band was left to wonder just how everything could have fallen apart so quickly. Because he was too sick to care for himself, Paul moved back to his parent's home in Temecula while he underwent treatment. The band was at another crossroad: Cut their losses and move on, or do everything in their power to make the band what it always had the potential to become.

INVERSE pressed forward. They wrote, demoed, promoted, networked and continued on as Paul kept up a fight of his own. The band would practice twice a week in Temecula, usually going until Paul couldn't even sit up anymore. But the work was paying off. The songs were coming along, and INVERSE was given the opportunity to record an EP with indie guru Casey Bates (Gatsby's American Dream, Daphne Loves Derby). The timing was perfect. Paul was declared in remission and finished his final chemotherapy session in late July 06'. Two months later, the band was on a plane to Seattle to record what had been years in the making.

The results are flawless. Matching the tightness and musical density of Queen with the punch of Thrice, INVERSE has produced an EP that has both power and melody. It rocks like it could shake arenas, but still keeps its soul. Now INVERSE is ready to take their band to the national stage and bring their brand of Rock and Roll to the masses.

Sat, April 19, 2008 - KNACDC Live Metal Karaoke band....They play, you sing - FREE

Well... we are all old Metal heads that grew up in or around the South Bay area of Los Angeles. We all grew up listening to metal and/or hard rock but eventually, in the early to mid eighties we migrated over to the harder stuff. Bands like Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, Anthrax, Voivod, Celtic Frost, Venom etc. Our individual tastes vary depending on who you ask, but none of that matters. We are all about the METAL! We have all played and/or still play in bands that have had varying degrees of success, or failure - depending on how you view the glass per say. Phil used to play guitar for the bands Wargod and Phantasm way back when. Marco and Kimokeo Bender played in a band called One Eye Open for a little while. Kimokeo played in Death By Stereo at one point in time. Mr. Webb still plays in a band that has been around since mosty of us were in high school back in the mid eighties - called PKG. The best thing about Webb is that he likes to pretend he is Leo Sayer by putting on a big fro wig and talking to us in that special voice that only Leo Sayer can give. Love it! Ask him about it sometime. Seriously! A new addition to the KNAC/DC group is Paul. Paul has replaced Owenscamp Mulrooney - who has moved to NY to persue a career in persuing a career. We love Owenscamp and will deeply miss him. Paul, does shred. Yes, I said shred. Back when we were all still amphibians he played guitar for Silent Scream. Paul will continue to provide his riffery to the Metal cause. We are very glad. Our friend Alex, who we go way back with, has a bar (Alex's Bar). Many a great rock show has passed through Alex's - and damn his drinks are strong!! Alex had struck gold with an 80's themed Karaoke band, so he thought he would try his luck at METAL KARAOKE. He asked us if we would be willing to put together a HEAVY METAL KARAOKE BAND - and we said "DONE". Sounds hilarious. It is!!! What a train wreck to watch a bunch of drunk dudes (and chicks) get up there still thinking they "got it" and belting out an old metal classic. Totally worth the price of admission - which incidentally is ZERO. Anyway... we began practicing in October of 2005 and the rest is history. Let's see how long we can keep this goin.

Thur, April 17, 2008 - Flametrick Subs, The Bermondsey Joyriders, Red Exiles - $5

The Flametrick Subs hail from Austin, Texas. Formed in 1989 by lead vocals/guitarist, Buster Crash and lead guitarist, Clem Hoot, The Subs are still rockin' harder than ever. The Flametrick Subs have always been, and always will be a raw, high energy-filled live performance with a fine blend of psycho-alien-voodoo-bad girl originals. A little Johnny Cash...a bit of The Cramps, and a touch of The Ramones. Most of all, they're all drinkin' songs! Adding even more to this insane rock 'n' roll show, The Subs are joined by the finest go-go dancers from HELL, The Satan's Cheerleaders!

The Flametrick Subs have three CD releases under their belt. In 1997, "Amaze Your Friends With X-Ray Glasses!" (Teen Rebel), and in 1998, "Undead At The Black Cat Lounge" (Texas Flat Lizard). Their third and latest CD, "Something in Japanese" (Kranzke), was released in the spring of 2002. The Subs also have two previous cassette releases. The first recording of The Flametrick Subs from 1993 is "Too Hot To Hoot" (Texas Flat Lizard...good luck finding it!), and the second is a self titled demo that ended up being released some time last century.

The Flametrick Subs have just recorded a new album in March 2004. Release date TBA.
